Taupo is one of the most popular destinations in New Zealand‘s North Island, and for good reason. I was lucky enough to spend a good amount of time there on my travels, so I have pulled this list of what to do in Taupo to make sure you enjoy it as much as I did!
Taupo is a lakeside town. But this sentence doesn’t do justice to the vast body of water that constitutes this lake. It is the largest lake in New Zealand, and is, in fact, the size of Singapore. It was formed due to one of the most powerful and violent volcanic eruptions of a vast supervolcano of the past 5,000 years. The lake now sits in the crater of this volcano, which is still considered active. The town of Taupo is found on the shore of this lake.
Why Visit Taupo?
Taupo is a vibrant yet laid-back town, perfectly sized to offer plenty of excitement without feeling overwhelming. Perched on the edge of stunning Lake Taupo, itโs a hub for adventure activities, from skydiving and jet boating to scenic hikes and cycling trails. If youโre wondering what to do in Taupo, youโll find a perfect balance of high-energy thrills and tranquil escapes. Despite its adrenaline-fuelled reputation, Taupo has that small-town charm, with inviting cafรฉs and bars, and a relaxed feel. The surrounding geothermal activity offers natural hot pools ideal for unwinding. With excellent restaurants, lively bars, and a wide range of activities, Taupo truly has something for everyone.
What to do in Taupo!
Wondering what to do in Taupo? Here are the best activities that cater to every want.
Visit Huka Falls
Huka Falls is one of the most visited spots in New Zealand, and it is located just 5 KM from the centre of Taupo. Over 220,000 litres of turquoise water pour over the edge of these falls every second, creating a powerful, mesmerising sight. You can stand on the bridge and feel the immense power of the water rushing beneath you. It might be the bluest water you have ever seen!
To get there, there are paths from the centre of Taupo, and it takes around an hour to walk. Alternatively, it is a 7-minute drive, and there is a big car park right next to it.

Check Out Aratiatia Rapids
If you venture beyond Huka Falls, youโll come across the Aratiatia Rapids. While itโs quite a long walk, a short drive will get you there quickly, with plenty of parking available. The Aratiatia Power Station, a hydroelectric facility on the Waikato River just outside Taupo, regularly releases thousands of litres of water from the dam. Be sure to time your visit carefully so you donโt miss this impressive natural spectacle. The dam gates open three times a day in winter and four times a day during summer:
Summer (Oct to March) release hours โ 10:00 am, 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm, 4:00 pm
Winter (Apr to Sep) release hours โ 10:00 am, 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm
Aim to get there at least 10 minutes before the release so as not to miss it!
Huka Falls Jetboat Ride
If you’re into thrills, don’t miss the chance to goย jet boating at Huka Falls. Jet boating was invented in New Zealand, and while there are plenty of places around the country to give it a go, doing it here feels extra special. Itโs an exciting way to take in the power of the Waikato River and get right up close to the thundering Huka Falls. Expect speed, spins, and a serious adrenaline rush!

Eat in the ‘Coolest McDonald’s in the World’
I am not usually one to go to McDonald’s, but when I was told that Taupo was home to the ‘coolest McDonald’s in the world‘, I had to give it a go. Where else would you get the chance to have a Big Mac (or McNuggets in my case) sitting inside a decommissioned DC-3 aeroplane? The plane was purchased by McDonaldโs back in 1990. It seats 20 diners and still has the original cockpit in the plane. A pretty unusual place to eat!

Hike the Tongariro Crossing
Quite simply, one of the best things you can do in New Zealand. Yes, I said it. Hiking the Tongariro Crossing was the highlight of my time in the North Island (second only to visiting Hobbiton). It is widely regarded as the best day hike you can do in New Zealand, and for good reason.
It is truly otherworldly, and the scenery is unlike anything you will have seen before. It gives you a chance to view the New Zealand you only imagined in your dreams (and saw in The Lord of the Rings), and it is an incredibly gratifying way to spend a day. It isn’t the easiest trek in the world, but it will be so worth it. Shuttles go daily (weather permitting) from Taupo.
If you are contemplating hiking the Tongariro Crossing, then make sure to read this guide first so you are fully prepared:
The Ulimate Tongariro Crossing Guide
Visit the Wairakei Terraces
The Wairakei Terraces and Thermal Spa are approximately 7km outside of Taupo and feature natural silica pools fed by geothermal water from the surrounding area. There are three main pools, with varying temperature levels, perfect for relaxing. Afterwards, there is a self-guided walk around the terraces, where you can see a unique geothermal wonderland.
If you choose to hike the Tongariro Crossing, this is the ideal activity for the day after. The waters here have been used for their healing properties for hundreds of years by the Mฤori.

Take an evening Cruise on Lake Taupo
You really canโt come to Taupo without spending some time out on the water. And what better way to do it than with a sunset cruise? There are loads of options to choose from, and theyโre the perfect excuse to sit back with a drink in hand, soak up the views, and, on a clear day, catch a glimpse of the Tongariro National Park in the distance. If you’re wondering what to do in Taupo, this is an ideal way to experience the lake. Donโt forget your swimmers either, thereโs often a chance to take a dip in the lake!
Orakei Korako Geothermal Park
Often called one of the countryโs best-kept geothermal secrets, Orakei Korako is well worth the short drive from Taupo. This unique spot is packed with colourful silica terraces, bubbling mud pools, and steaming geysers. All set in a stunning, untouched landscape. Itโs a bit off the beaten track, which just adds to the magic.
Admire the Mฤori Carvings
When it comes to what to do in Taupo, seeing these Mฤori carvings is one of the most unique things you can do in Taupo. Only accessible from the water, so to see them you either need to head out on a kayak or take a boat trip. They were completed in the 1980s, with carvings dangling down over the rock face.
Standing at 14 feet tall and carved directly into the rock face, these are seriously impressive to see up close. The main feature is a striking depiction of Ngatoroirangi, a prominent figure in Mฤori tradition. Surrounding this are smaller carvings that represent tupuna (ancestors) and kaitiaki (guardians). All of which hold deep significance to the local Mฤori iwi.

Soak in the Otumuheke Stream – What to do in Taupo
Tucked away in Spa Thermal Park, Otumuheke Stream is a natural hot spring that flows gently into the Waikato River, and itโs completely free to enjoy. If youโre looking for a more local, low-key option when deciding what to do in Taupo, this is a lovely spot to unwind after a busy day exploring, with warm water, a peaceful setting, and fewer crowds than some of the commercial spas. Pack your swimmers and a towel, and settle in for a relaxing soak surrounded by nature.
Wander around the Craters of the Moon
Continuing with the geothermal activities, a visit to the Craters of the Moon. As the name suggests, this is an otherworldly landscape that really does feel like you have landed on the moon. The boardwalk around the site takes about an hour. There is also an optional extra climb, and if you feel up for it, you will be rewarded by some pretty impressive views.
It costs NZD 10 to enter, so perfect if you are on a budget. Enjoy the bubbling mud pools, cracks issuing steam and patches of vibrant, mineral-stained earth that add a surreal splash of colour to the scene.

Go skydiving!
Again, there are plenty of places to go skydiving in New Zealand, but Taupo is one of the most incredible. This is due to the stunning views of Lake Taupo, as well as coast-to-coast views of the North Island and the views of volcanoes.

I did my skydive (something I always swore I would NEVER do) with Taupo Tandem Skydiving, and they were fantastic! The price included being picked up from my hostel, in an open-top stretched jeep, no less. The team were fantastic! Very calm, friendly, reassuring and a lot of fun! One of the best experiences, it pushed me so far out of my comfort zone, and I was so proud of doing it.
Top Tip: There are four heights โ 9,000 ft, 12,000 ft, 15,000 ft or 16,500 ft, where you have up to 70 seconds in free fall! You can decide on the day, but I found myself being talked into a 12,000 ft one!
Try to win $10,000 – What to do in Taupo
Are you good at swinging a golf club and up for a challenge? This could be your chance to win $10,000! If youโre wondering what to do in Taupo, try your luck at the Lake Taupล Hole in One Challenge! Set right on the lakefront, youโll be hitting golf balls out onto a floating pontoon. If you manage a hole-in-one, thereโs a prize waiting. Even if you donโt win, itโs a fun and light-hearted way to spend some time by the water.
Find the #lovetaupo sign – What to do in Taupo
Right next to the hole-in-one is an easy and iconic photo stop. Overlooking the lake, the #lovetaupo sign is a quick and easy stop to get all the proof you need that you were in Taupo! Plus, there are some pretty stunning views of the lake from this spot (although let’s face it, all of the views of the lake are stunning!).
Swim in Lake Taupo – What to do in Taupo
A must-do, and a free activity! You can’t visit Taupo and not take a refreshing dip in Lake Taupo. On a sunny day, thereโs nothing better than a swim in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Taupo. The lake is surprisingly warm in summer, and there are plenty of great spots to take a dip, from sandy beaches to quiet bays. Itโs the perfect way to cool off after a day of exploring.
Stroll around Lake Taupo – What to do in Taupo
It would take you around 5-7 days to walk around the entirety of Lake Taupo, which gives you some perspective on just how big this lake is! The full trail, known as the Great Lake Trail, is 71km long and can be completed in sections. While itโs popular with mountain bikers, many parts are also perfect for walkers looking to enjoy the lakeโs views at a slower pace. The Kinloch to Whakaipo Bay section is especially scenic, with quiet beaches, native bush, and plenty of photoworthy spots along the way. For those planning what to do in Taupo, even if you donโt fancy the full trail, shorter lakeside strolls from Taupo town offer lovely views and a relaxing way to take in the area.

Try Trout Fishing on Lake Taupo – What to do in Taupo
If youโre into fishing or just keen to give it a go, trout fishing on Lake Taupo is a classic Kiwi experience. The lake is famous for its rainbow and brown trout, attracting anglers from all over. Whether youโre a seasoned pro or a beginner, there are plenty of guided tours and boat hire options to help you cast your line in the right spots. Even if you donโt catch a trophy fish, spending a peaceful day on the water surrounded by stunning scenery is a win in itself.
Take a Scenic Helicopter Flight – What to do in Taupo
If your list of what to do in Taupo has some time for something a little extravagant, then a helicopter ride from Taupo would be one of the most incredible things to do. Full transparency, my budget didn’t stretch to this as I had a flight planned in Franz Josef on the South Island, but I wish it had!
From the air, youโll have stunning views of Lake Taupo, the geothermal wonders, and nearby volcanic peaks like Mount Tongariro and Mount Ruapehu. You also have a chance to see the Mฤori carvings from the air. Itโs an incredible experience that puts the dramatic landscape into perspective and offers plenty of photo opportunities.
How many days do you need in Taupo?
You can see nearly everything you want to in 2-3 days in Taupo. However, if you are planning on hiking the Tongariro Crossing, then this is a full-day activity, so I would recommend spending one extra day. I was in Taupo for a week, and this was more than enough time to see everything I wanted, including doing the hike twice!
When is the best time to visit Taupo?
The best time to visit Taupล really depends on what kind of experience youโre after.
Summer (December to February) is ideal if youโre keen to make the most of the lake, with warm weather perfect for swimming, boating, and outdoor adventures. Just be prepared for more crowds and higher prices.
Autumn (March to May) has cooler temperatures, beautiful colours, and a more relaxed vibe, while winter (June to August) is great if youโre heading to the nearby ski slopes or fancy soaking in a hot pool without the summer buzz.
Spring (September to November) is a lovely time too, with blooming landscapes and fewer visitors before the busy season begins.
Taupล is a year-round destination, but timing your visit around what you want to do will make it even better.

How to get to Taupo?

Transport Options to get to Taupo
Kiwi Experience
I travelled to Taupo from Rotorua on the Kiwi Experience bus (you can read all about this way of travelling here: Kiwi Experience review: what it is really like to travel around New Zealand with Kiwi Experience). However, there are multiple ways to get to Taupo.

Intercity and other coach services run regular routes, with comfortable seating and luggage allowance included. Itโs a relaxed way to take in the scenery without having to worry about driving.
By plane
Taupล has a small regional airport with daily flights to and from Auckland. Itโs the quickest way to reach Taupล if youโre short on time, with flight times of around one hour. Once you land, the town centre is just a short drive or taxi ride away, making it an easy and efficient option.
