Welcome to

Who am I?
Hello and welcome to Where Charlie Wanders. I’m Charlie, I am a 30-something, single homeowner with a huge passion for travel and wandering. I’ve been travelling solo for over 12 years. I started this blog in 2017 to share my love of exploring the world.
How can I help you? Well, I am passionate about three things in travel:
- Solo travel in your 30’s
- Adventure travel isn’t just for the young or long term travellers
- Travelling and taking career breaks in your 30s are truly wonderful things!

I live in the delightful city of Norwich, UK, and take great joy in exploring my local area. But nothing thrills me more than heading off to discover a new destination.

How do I travel?
For much of my travel life, I fitted big adventures around my 9–5 job. Not everyone has the ability to indulge in long term travel, so this blog is packed with tips on how to maximise your time, city break inspiration, and how adventure travel is absolutely possible alongside a full time career. Whether your limitations are time or money, I’ve found ways to work around the system!
I’ve become something of an expert at squeezing as much travel as possible into whatever time I have available.
In 2024, I made the big decision to leave my full-time job and go solo backpacking for nine months in my mid-30s. You often see people doing this sort of trip in their 20s, but I firmly believe that age should never be a barrier to travel. My aim is to inspire others in their 30s to see that it’s entirely possible to travel the world, whatever your age. On this blog, you’ll find all the tools to help make that happen
I’m also passionate about the joy of group travel tours. They’re the perfect way to solo travel in destinations that might feel a little more challenging, offer brilliant access to harder to reach places, and are a fantastic way to maximise your time.If you’re looking to make the most of limited travel time, or want tips on travelling as a single 30 something female, this is the place for you!

Why do I Blog?
I started this blog in 2017 to document my quest to visit 30 countries before I turned 30. In 2016, I reached my 30th country, Guatemala, but I decided not to stop there.
As my travel life evolved, so did the blog. I continued documenting the places I wandered to around the world. It became a space to preserve my own memories, share tips, thoughts, and advice, and hopefully spark a little wanderlust along the way. Now, I hope this corner of the internet inspires others to chase their travel dreams, no matter the obstacles, be it time, money, age, or logistics!

Where have I been?
My favourite destinations are Mongolia, New Zealand, Egypt and Botswana .
My love of travel started young, with childhood trips full of European breaks. Since then, my adventures have taken me far and wide:
- In 2014, I travelled solo around Southeast Asia on group tours.
- In 2016, I spent three weeks on an adventure tour through Central America.
- In the summer of 2017, I visited Mongolia with G Adventures.
- I’ve overlanded through Africa for four incredible months.
- I took a solo one week trip to Chile.
- I’ve enjoyed countless city breaks across Europe.
- I fell in love with Egypt during a trip that also included Jordan.
- I went on a one week New England fall foliage road trip with my best friend.
- I ticked off a major bucket list dream by hiking the Inca Trail, after winning a competition at work!
- I left my job to take a grown up gap year, travelling through Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, Kiribati, Fiji, and Qatar.
Other destinations I’ve explored include Japan, Ghana, Marrakech, California, Iceland, and many more.
I also have a lot of love for my home county of Norfolk, UK, and enjoy exploring other parts of the UK as well. Every year, I take family holidays to Menorca and go skiing with them too. And I’ve visited New York three times for short city breaks, I’m always itching to go back!Hopefully, this blog will inspire you to discover the joy of solo travel and realise that you truly can do anything you set your mind to!
