Buckle up team, this itinerary is fast. There is no two ways about it. Australia is huge, and even just focusing on the East Coast of the country, there are massive distances to cover. But if youโ€™ve only got three weeks and want to cram in as much as possible, all without flying and all on public transport, then read on for a fast paced 3-week Sydney to Cairns itinerary.

This is also not a blog post covering road tripping across this country. Perfect for solo travellers who don’t want to have to drive such long distances alone. This is laid out exactly how I did it and my trip was definitely geared towards seeing the ‘must-see’s’ along the East Coast. So this is perfect for a first time visit to this amazing part of the world.

Of course, if you want to start in Cairns and finish in Sydney, then just do this itinerary in reverse.

Is 3 weeks enough time to travel from Sydney to Cairns?

Given the size of Australia, and even the East Coast, 3 weeks is never really going to be long enough when travelling from Sydney to Cairns – you are absolutely going to want to spend more time in each place. However, long term slow travel isn’t always an option. If you are tight on time due to annual leave, or other restrictions, then this itinerary definitely works. It gives you enough time to see the best of each place, and the best stops along the way.

How to travel from Sydney to Cairns

Greyhound Bus

If you are not wanting to undertake a road trip along the East Coast of Australia, then there is really only one way to get around – the Greyhound bus. They offer different bus passes for different lengths of trips. From 7 days, to 15 to 30 and even make your own. Once you have purchased it is really easy to log onto your account and book as many buses and you like within the time frame of your pass.

You can cancel, rebook and change whenever you want, and even chose your seat. Easy to use, and very convenient.

Campervans

Alternatively, if you are looking for a little more flexibility and want to take more control, then self driving is defintely the way forward. You will see a lot of campervans on the road as you travel around. I recommend Travellers Autobarn for a wide range of campervans, ranging from a station wagon with tent to one that sleeps 5!

Day trips

As this itinerary is geared towards those getting around on public transport, a lot of day trips are going to be involved. I book these through Viator or GetYourGuide, and will include links to each one – to make sure you see the best of each place.

Sydney to Cairns 3 week itinerary – the detailed breakdown

Sydney: Days 1-2

Flying into Sydney makes the most sense. It is one of the most connected cities along the East Coast, with plenty of arrival options. Make sure to check out Skyscanner for the best times and prices. My flight landed at 5pm, which was the perfect time to rest and try and beat jet lag ahead of day one. I would recommend arriving the day before your Sydney to Cairns to itinerary starts, to give you a good two full days of exploring.

What to see in Sydney:

Where to stay in Sydney:

There are numerous options of where to stay in Sydney and you really can’t go wrong. The city is incredibly well connected, and the public transport easy to understand For this part of the trip, I would recommend staying near the CBD or the Rocks, to allow you to make the most of exploring those areas.

Check out:

Bondi: Day 3

Technically part of Sydney, but as Bondi is so iconic I think it deserves a day on its own. It offers a very different vibe from the city centre, but is easily accessible via bus links. It is much more laid back and famed for its beaches, cafe culture and, of course, surfing.

What to see in Bondi:

  • Relax on Bondi Beach
  • Visit the Bondi Icebergs
  • Bondi to Coogee walk

Where to stay in Bondi:

I stayed in the Baxley Bondi and highly recommend. It is about a kilometre from the beach, but close to transport to get back to Sydney Central. It’s stylish and minimalist, with a great sense of community.

Blue Mountains: Days 4-5

An easy day trip from Sydney, but also well worth taking a little bit of extra time and staying the night. There are three main villages in the Blue Mountains – Katoomba, Leura and Blackheath. I stayed in Katoomba which has the most amenities, but all are packed with charm.

What to see in the Blue Mountains:

  • Hop-on-hop-off bus. A really convenient way to see as much as possible in the area.
  • Katoomba Cascades
  • Leura Cascades
  • Honeymoon lookout
  • Three Sisters

For more details on how to get to the Blue Mountains, how to get around and what to see, then check out this post: An amazing Blue Mountains trip from Sydney, Australia

Where to stay in the Blue Mountains:

There are a number of options in Katoomba, to cover a range of budgets. No14 Lovel St is highly recommended for being charming, cosy and a good location.

Sydney / Overnight bus: Day 6

Spend day 6 making your way back to Sydney at your leisure. Either head early if you feel you have more to see in the city, or take a bit more time to chill in the mountains. However, make sure to be back in time to catch the overnight bus from Sydney to Byron Bay. It takes 13 hours, and try your best to get some sleep!

Byron Bay: Days 7-8

Your first day in Byron Bay is going to be a slow one, if you have just come off the overnight bus. But, this place is the perfect place to recover. Laid back, chilled and the ultimate surf vibe.

What to see in Byron Bay:

  • Cape Byron Lighthouse
  • Most easterly point of main land Australia
  • Belongli Beach
  • Main Beach
  • Brunch at Bayleaf cafe
  • Lunch at Treehouse
  • Piano Bar at the Northern
  • Keep an eye out for Chris Hemsworth!

Where to stay in Byron Bay:

For a laid back, clean and friendly hostel I recommend Wake Up! Byron Bay. It is located about a 20 min walk from Main Beach, but they do have hourly shuttles.

Noosa: Days 9-11

Hop on the Greyhound Bus from Byron Bay first thing in the morning, switch it up in Brisbane, and youโ€™ll roll into Noosa by early afternoon. Noosa’s got it allโ€”gorgeous beaches, amazing national parks, lively local markets, and that chill yet classy vibe you can’t resist.

At the end of your last day in Noosa, grab the Greyhound to Hervey Bay which is one of the places to visit K’gari from.

What to see in Noosa:

  • Noosa National Park
  • Fairy Pools
  • Tea Tree Beach
  • Noosa Heads Main Beach
  • Noosa Everglades

Where to stay in Noosa:

It is a little way out of the town, and they don’t have many shuttles during the day, but Bounce Noosa was one of my favourite hostels I stayed in. Alternatively, check out Nomads Noosa.

K’gari: Day 12

You’ll want to get to Hervey Bay the night before you head out for a day trip to K’gari (which used to be called Fraser Island). Some tours even kick off from Rainbow Beach. K’gari was one of the best places I visited on the East Coast, and itโ€™s such a special place! It’s got jaw-dropping scenery with crystal-clear lakes, ancient rainforests, and endless sandy beachesโ€”all on the world’s biggest sand island.

After your day trip, get dropped off at the Greyhound bus stop for an overnight bus to Airlie Beach.

What to see in K’gari:

  • Maheno Shipwreck
  • Lake Mackenzie
  • Eli Creek
  • 75-mile beach
  • Central Station Rainforest

Top Tip: Make sure to see the best of K’gari with a THIS day trip from Hervey Bay with K’gari Explorers.

Where to stay in Hervey Bay / K’gari:

If you are only doing a day trip to K’gari, then you will need accommodation in Hervey Bay. For backpacking the Woolshed Eco Lodge is the place to go.

If you are lucky enough to be spending a night on the island then K’gari Beach Resort is excellently located.

Whitsundays (Airlie Beach): Days 14-16

Airlie Beach is the gateway to the Whitsundays, so you will want to have a chill day upon arrival after getting off the overnight bus.

From there make sure to take at least a two-day trip around the Whitsundays to make sure you have enough time to enjoy snorkelling and all this place has to offer. Once back on dry land, do not miss the chance to see the Whitsundays from the air.

What to do in the Whitsundays and Airlie Beach:

Where to stay in Airlie Beach:

Once on dry land, Nomads Airlie Beach is a great place to stay. With multiple pools, cute cabin style dorms and easy access to bars and restaurants.

Travel day: Day 17

When in Australia, some days you just have to cover long distances. This day on the Sydney to Cairns itinerary is a long Greyhound Bus day travelling the 620KM from Airlie Beach to Cairns. Leave at 10am and arrive into Cairns at 8pm.

Cairns: Days 18-21

You’ve made it to Cairns! The final stop on your 3 week trip travelling from Sydney to Cairns. The air will feel a little more humid here, and the vibe a little different. This tropical town is the gateway to so many amazing day trips you can take to explore the beautiful northern Queensland.

Where to stay in Cairns:

If you only take one recommendation of where to stay from this blog post, then let this be the one! Travellers Oasis was a little haven of respite. Small, and very relaxed with a pool, lots of kitchens, excellent options for dorms and private rooms and even outdoor showers!

If you have more than 3 weeks to travel from Sydney to Cairns?

If you have longer than 3 weeks to travel from Sydney to Cairns there firstly a few places already on this itinerary I would recommend staying longer in. Then there are lots of places on the East Coast you could add. Finally there are other places in other regions of Australia you might want to consider, which you can visit just for a few days. Obviously if time is no factor than you can spend, well basically, the rest of your life trying to visit places in Australia.

FUN FACT
Did you know it would take 29 years to visit every beach in Australia if you visited one new beach each day. Australia has 10,685 beaches
The size of this country…

Where to stay longer

If you have more time to take when travelling from Sydney to Cairns, I would recommend spending more nights in these places:

  • Byron Bay – You will see all you ‘need’ to see in a day, but to fully enjoy the laid back and chilled vibe of the place take another day or two. Simply just to relax on the beach, shop and eat at more cafes.
  • K’gari – This would be my biggest recommendation. If you can take at least a night, if not 2 on the island. A lot of tours offering two nights camping, and this looks incredible.
  • Cairns – for further exploration into Daintree, and to visit some of the beautiful waterfalls in the area.

Where else to visit on the East Coast

If you want to see a few more sights along the way, here are a couple of places you might want to check out:

  • Brisbane
  • Surfers Paradise
  • Magnetic Island
  • Palm Cove

Where else to visit in Australia

Finally, if you have a few more days to add onto to your trip there are a couple of places I visited and stayed for a few days that I highly recommended:

  • Uluru: The heart of Australia. It is hard to describe how special this place is, but it was my favourite place I visted during my time in the country. I spent three nights staying at Ayers Rock Resort and it was the perfect amount of time to visit Uluru and Kata Tjuta.
  • Melbourne: The artsy, hippy city in Victoria. A thriving bar and restaurant scene, as well as wonderful street art. If city’s are your thing, you won’t want to miss this.
  • Great Ocean Road: Take three days to drive along the Great Ocean Road to marvel at the beautiful coastline and, of course, see the 12 Apostles along the way. Stay at Apollo Bay and Port Campbell to break up the drive.
