Is Menorca in May a Good Time to Visit?

May is one of the best times to visit Menorca. It sits in that sweet spot just before the summer rush, meaning you get the best of both worlds. The weather is getting warmer, and the beaches aren’t packed shoulder to shoulder.

The island also feels quite local in May. Many local restaurants and businesses have just reopened for the season, prices are lower than peak summer, and you’ll find it much easier to get a table at that clifftop restaurant or a sunbed on the beach.

How to get to Menorca in May

The quickest way to start your holiday is to fly into Menorca Airport (MAH), located just 5km from the capital, Mahรณn.

By May, the season is well underway, so flight frequency is significantly higher, and you’ll have plenty of options to choose from.

How to get around Menorca in May

By May, bus services are up and running at increased frequency, with routes beginning to reach coastal areas and beaches. That being said, they may not yet be at full summer frequency, so if you want the flexibility to explore at your own pace, hiring a car is still the best option. This also gives you the chance to explore some of Menorca’s more remote areas, quieter coves, and inland villages.

This handy guide will help you with all you need to know about hiring a car in Menorca: Hiring A Car in Menorca: Everything You Need to Know

Hiring a scooter is another popular option, and it’s great for solo travellers and couples. A good option in May when the roads are still quieter ahead of the peak summer season.

If you don’t want to drive, there are still a few options. The bus route between the two main cities, Mahรณn and Ciutadella, does run year-round. There are taxis available from Mahรณn and Ciutadella. Pre-booking a private transfer from the airport works well for arrivals.

Weather in Menorca in May

May is a beautiful month in Menorca. Summer is definitely on its way, wildflowers are still across the landscape, and the warm sunshine has fully made an appearance. But the crowds of summer are yet to arrive. It’s a genuinely lovely time to visit, whether you’re after beach days, outdoor exploring, or a bit of both.

  • Temperatures in May typically reach around 22ยฐC, dropping to around 14ยฐC in the evenings. Towards the end of the month, daily highs can reach around 24ยฐC.
  • There are around 9 hours of sunshine per day on average.
  • May usually sees around 35mm of rainfall across 9 days in the month. Showers that do occur tend to be scattered rather than prolonged.
  • The sea temperature reaches around 18ยฐC in May. It is still cool, but plenty of visitors are happy to swim.
  • Winds are generally light to moderate, making it pleasant for coastal walks and watersports.

Things to do in Menorca in May 2026

When visiting Menorca in May, here are some of the best things to do.

Visit the Beaches

With over 90 beaches to choose from, there is a beach for every season, and there are some special ones in May. The sea temperature is around 18ยฐC in May, making swimming perfectly manageable (once you’re in) for most visitors. But despite this, the beaches are relatively quiet compared to the summer months.

A charming white-washed building with a red balcony at Playa Binisafua, another highlight among the best beaches in Menorca, with a small white boat floating in the clear turquoise water and lush green coastal foliage in the background.

South Coast highlights include the twin coves of Cala Macarella and Macarelleta. These are arguably the most photographed beaches on the island, with pine-fringed cliffs and gorgeous turquoise water. In summer, access is restricted, and parking is a nightmare; in May, things are less busy. However, if the weather is particularly fine, it is still advisable to arrive early at the popular beaches. Cala Turqueta and Cala Mitjana are equally stunning and equally crowd-free. On the north coast, Cala Pregonda stands out for its unusual reddish-golden sand and dramatic rocky outcrops, and is only reachable on foot or by boat, making it a perfect May day out.

By May, many of the beach bars have reopened for the season, so you can enjoy a drink or a bite to eat without having to pack your own supplies. Bus services to coastal areas are also up and running, though hiring a car still gives you the freedom to reach the quieter, more remote coves at your own pace.

Explore Ciutadella Old Town

Ciutadella was the original capital of Menorca before it was moved to Mahรณn under British Rule. In contrast to much of Menorca, Ciutadella is characterised by honey coloured stone buildings, rather than the usual whitewash of the island. Think cobbled alleyways, street cafes, a pretty harbour and cathedrals and churches.

May is a wonderful time to visit the city. The crowds are building, but nowhere near the summer levels, so it still feels relaxed to explore. The cafe terraces are all open, with seating in the squares and alleyways. Sunset falls around 9โ€“9.15 PM in May, so there is a lovely long golden hour in the evening to explore the harbour and old town.

Visit the Prehistoric Talayotic Sites

Menorca is home to over 1,500 Talayotic settlements scattered across the island. First appearing nearly 3,000 years ago, it was inhabited until the Romans arrived around 110 AD. These ancient villages are unlike anything else in the Mediterranean. Sites are categorised on-site as ‘must-sees’, ‘interesting sites’ and ‘other prehistoric sites’, with 13 and 17 in the first two categories, respectively.

The most distinctive feature is the Taula enclosure โ€” a unique-to-Menorca T-shaped stone monument believed to have been used for worship. Other structures include circular dwellings, Talayots (thought to have been used for surveillance), and Hypostyle Halls.

May is a fantastic time to visit the sites. The temperatures are warm and pleasant, but not as hot as in summer. The wildflowers and green spaces are still adding colour, making this a very photogenic time to see them. Crowds are building but still well below summer levels, so you can take your time without feeling rushed. By May, opening hours have returned to their summer schedule, but it’s still worth checking the specific sites before you visit.

Walk the Camรญ de Cavalls Coastal Path

The Camรญ de Cavalls is one of the most popular activities in Menorca. This incredible pathway has existed since the 1300โ€™s, when King James III required all settlers on the island to keep an armed horse at the ready to defend the island if needed. The settlers and their horses used the path to do so, hence Cami de Cavalls, which translates to โ€˜way of the horsesโ€™.Today, the path is divided into 20 sections; it is 185km long, and you can hike all or some of them. A full day is sufficient to walk one section and return by public transport.

May is a great time to walk all or part of the Camรญ de Cavalls. The temperatures sit in a very pleasant 18โ€“22ยฐC range. Warm, but not too hot to make the hike unbearable. The route sections are less busy than in summer, and accommodation on the island is still cheaper. By May, the coastal bus services are up and running, making it straightforward to walk a section one way and hop on a bus back.

Birdwatching at S’Albufera des Grau Natural Park

S’Albufera des Grau is a beautiful natural park of more than 5,000 hectares of wetlands, wild olive trees and dune beaches that stretch from Mahรณn to Es Mercadal. There are three routes through the park and birdwatching hides. Entry is free. May is one of the best months for birdwatching in Menorca. Spring migration is in full swing, and Menorca’s position on the European-African migratory route means the island acts as a crucial stepping stone for birds heading north. Many resident birds are also settling into breeding season. Meaning you get local, as well as migrating birds.

Spring migrants to look out for include Purple Heron, Squacco Heron, Honey Buzzard, Golden Oriole, Bee-eater, Roller and Red-footed Falcon alongside year-round residents like Osprey, Egyptian Vulture and Peregrine Falcon. May also brings a good chance of spotting Turtle Dove, which is increasingly rare across Europe but still a regular visitor to Menorca in spring.

Kayaking and Paddleboarding

May is a great month to get out on the water in Menorca. The sea is calm, the weather is warm enough, and the coves are quiet enough that you can often paddle right up to the beaches without worrying too much about boats. Most hire companies are up and running in Menorca in May, so you have plenty of options to choose from. Some good options include:

  • Menorca Caves Kayaking Tour: From Cala en Porter, take this kayak tour to explore some of the hidden coves on the south of the island. With a chance to snorkel if you want to get in the water!
  • Kayak Adventure in the Beautiful Bay of Fornells: Exploring the crystal-clear waters, rocky shoreline, and small beaches that can only be reached by sea from the calm bay of Fornells.
  • Stand Up Paddle from Fornells: The wide, sheltered bay at Fornells is ideal for paddleboarding, particularly for beginners. The calm, flat water and stunning surroundings make it one of the most popular spots on the island.
A stunning view of Cala Morell, one of the best beaches in Menorca, featuring crystal-clear turquoise waters contrasted against unique reddish rock formations and rugged cliffs under a clear blue sky.

Visiting Mahรณn and the Harbour

The capital of the island, Maรณ in Catalan, is definitely worth a wander around. It is home to one of the largest natural harbours in the world, and it is also a great place to learn about the island. It isnโ€™t a large city, so it is very easy to explore on foot. May is a fantastic time to visit Mahon, with the harbour buzzing with early-season vibes, but it is still more relaxed than the peak of summer.

There is much to learn about the cityโ€™s history. Take the time to explore the harbour area and admire the beautiful yachts that are returning for the summer. There are plenty of delicious restaurants and bars to discover, and outdoor dining is now in full spring, perfect for a long lunch or sundowner. Don’t miss the covered market of Mercat des Claustre, which is inside a former Augustinian convent. By May, the market is at its vibrant best, with fresh local produce, seasonal vegetables, artisan cheeses and Menorcan gin all on offer.

Visit Monte Toro

Menorca is famously flat, which makes Monte Toro, the island’s highest point, easy to spot from almost anywhere. You can walk or drive to the summit, and May is a particularly lovely time to make the trip. The spring greenery is still across the landscape, and the wildflowers that cover the hillside on the way up add a splash of colour that isn’t there come summer. Just make sure you pick a clear day to make the most of the panoramic views across the whole island.

At the summit, you’ll find a 17th-century sanctuary dedicated to the patron saint of Menorca, managed by a community of Franciscan nuns. It’s a peaceful and significant religious site.

Explore Lithica

Lithica is a former quarry located on the west of the island, not far from Ciutadella. Saying you should spend time in a quarry as something to do in Menorca in May might sound a bit odd, but trust me, it is worth it! Until 1994, it supplied the marรฉs stone used as the building material for much of western Menorca. Once production ended, instead of leaving it to mar the landscape, it was converted into a beautiful cultural space.

Today, you can wander the towering stone labyrinths and geometric gardens that fill the space. There is a massive stone labyrinth in the centre that is a bit of a workout for the brain, but the real highlight is the hidden Medieval Garden, which you discover by literally walking through a rock. May is a wonderful time to visit, the gardens are at their most colourful with spring planting in full bloom, and the temperature is warm, but not too hot.

Events in Menorca in May 2026

Alongside the fantastic things to do in Menorca in May, there are also several events happening that will hopefully coincide with your visit, so you can experience another side to the island.

Trail Menorca Camรญ de Cavalls

The Trail Menorca Camรญ de Cavalls is one of the most spectacular sporting events on the island. In 2026, it runs from 1st to 3rd May and draws runners from Europe and beyond.

It is a single-stage ultramarathon race that goes around the whole island through the Camรญ de Cavalls. There are 8 distances, ranging from 185 km to 11 km and including relays, there is a challenge for every level of trail. The start and finish areas are in Ciutadella and are buzzing with energy, as people support the runners coming in. Even if you don’t want to run, the event brings a wonderful atmosphere to the island, with restaurants and bars lively.

Maรณ + Flors โ€” Fiesta de las Flores

If you’re visiting Menorca in May, the Maรณ + Flors festival takes place in the third week of May. This three-day celebration transforms Mahรณn into a living city of flowers, with over fifty cultural activities and around eighty public and private spaces decorated throughout the city, which range from harbour-side courtyards to tucked-away doorways in the historic centre.

Menorca Jazz Festival

Now in its 28th edition, the Menorca Jazz Festival is one of the island’s most beloved annual events, and in May it reaches its finale. The festival runs from February through to mid-May, with concerts in both indoor venues and outdoor spaces across Ciutadella, Mahรณn, Alaior and Ferreries. It’s an island-wide celebration rather than a single weekend event.

The Pรญcnic Vega Jazz, held on 16 May at the Palmeral de Cala en Blanes, is a highlight. It is an outdoor picnic concert that gives the perfect relaxed spring feel in Menorca. There is also a swing and classic jazz trio concert on 2nd May.

Hauser & Wirth

Hauser & Wirth is located on a small island, Illa del Rei, in the middle of Mahon Harbour. The gallery is housed in repurposed 18th-century outbuildings of a naval hospital.

The 2026 season opens with a special presentation by Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Creed, centred on his work ‘Half the air in a given space’, which is a room filled with balloons that visitors can physically walk through and interact with. It’s fun, accessible and genuinely unlike anything else you’ll see on the island. In May, the gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10 amโ€“4 pm. A short shuttle boat from Mahรณn port gets you there in around 15 minutes.

Opera Season at Teatre Principal de Maรณ

One of the oldest opera houses in Spain, the Teatre Principal de Maรณ is a beautifully preserved 19th-century venue right in the heart of Mahรณn. May 2026 is a particularly special time to visit. Verdi’s opera, A Masked Ball, runs on both 29th and 31st May, giving you two chances to experience a full opera performance in one of the Mediterranean’s most intimate and atmospheric settings.

The May programme also includes a Great Gala on 9 May and an End of Year Concert on 13 May, so there are plenty of options even if opera isn’t your thing. Check the website for tickets and the full programme. It’s worth noting that popular performances do sell out, so booking ahead is recommended.

What to Wear in Menorca in May

  • Layers: Light tops and t-shirts for daytime. May is warm enough to dress for the summer during the day. Evenings are still cool, so bring a warm cardigan or mid-layer jacket for evenings.
  • Waterproof: The odd shower can still appear in May, so a lightweight packable waterproof is useful.
  • Swimwear: May is warm enough to consider a beach day, so pack your swimwear. The sea is around 18ยฐC, cool for some but perfectly swimmable for many.
  • Activity Gear: sturdy walking shoes or trainers are a must if you’re planning to walk the Camรญ de Cavalls or visit the prehistoric sites. Proper hiking boots are recommended for longer trail sections.

She is surrounded by the villageโ€™s signature whitewashed houses with dark wooden balconies, with a tall palm tree and a low white stone wall visible in the background under a pale sky.

Things to Consider when Visiting Menorca in May

If you are planning to visit Menorca in May, here are a few final helpful pointers to ensure you have the best time.

  • Swimming: The sea reaches around 18ยฐC in May โ€” cool for some but perfectly swimmable for many. If you’re planning on taking the plunge, it’s worth knowing it’ll feel refreshing rather than warm.
  • Crowds: While May is comparatively quiet compared to summer, the island is starting to get busier. Popular beaches and restaurants are filling up, so booking ahead for dinner and arriving early at the most famous coves is increasingly worthwhile.
  • Variable Weather: Mostly sunny and warm, but the occasional light shower can still appear. A lightweight waterproof in your bag is worth it just in case.
  • Bus services: Coastal bus routes are up and running by May, which opens up more of the island without a car. That said Car hire is strongly recommended to make the most of the island.
  • Beach facilities: Many beach bars and chiringuitos are open in May, but if you are planning to visit the remote coves, bring your own water and snacks.
  • Sunset times: Sunsets fall around 9โ€“9:15 pm in May, giving you long evenings to explore the harbours, enjoy outdoor dining and soak up the golden light.
  • Booking Ahead: Attractions, boat tours and activity operators are in full swing by May, and popular experiences are starting to fill up. It’s worth booking ahead for things like kayak tours, boat trips and restaurant tables at the more sought-after spots.
  • Pollen: May is still a high pollen month in Menorca as wildflowers remain in bloom. Worth flagging for hay fever sufferers, bring antihistamines if needed.

Menorca in May vs Other Months

May is a perfect time to visit Menorca. Warm, sunny and well into the season, but without the intensity of peak summer. Here’s how it compares:

  • Januaryโ€“March: The island is at its quietest, with many businesses closed and limited transport. Fine for a peaceful escape, but not ideal for first-time visitors.
  • April: The season begins to wake up. Quieter beaches, lower prices, wildflowers everywhere and great conditions for walking, cycling and sightseeing. The trade-off is cooler evenings, a chilly sea and some limited facilities.
  • May: A great time! Warm days, long evenings, most businesses open, beaches still uncrowded and the sea becoming swimmable. Arguably one of the best months on the Menorcan calendar.
  • June: Builds on May’s strengths with even warmer temperatures and a warmer sea. Crowds are starting to grow, but are still manageable. A great alternative if you want slightly more warmth.
  • Julyโ€“August: Peak season. The island is busy, prices are at their highest, and the most popular beaches and roads can feel overcrowded. Temperatures regularly push 30ยฐC, making long walks and cycling uncomfortable.
  • Septemberโ€“October: A second sweet spot. Still warm, sea temperature at its best, crowds thinning out, and prices dropping.
  • Novemberโ€“December: Similar to winter, the island winds down significantly.

The verdict: Menorca in May is ideal for travellers who want the best of everything. Warm weather, uncrowded beaches, a full calendar of events and the island feeling alive without the chaos of peak summer. Whether you’re after outdoor adventures, cultural experiences or simply long lazy evenings by the harbour, May delivers.
