If you are staying in Palma de Mallorca, then a day trip to Soller is an absolute must. This one-day itinerary includes getting the train from Palma, a coffee and a wander in the town of Sóller and then lunch and an afternoon in Port de Sóller. This day trip is fun and picturesque, as well as being incredibly easy, so it should be added to any visit to Mallorca.
The highlight of the day trip to Soller is the stunning Palma Soller train, officially called the Tren de Sóller or the Ferrocarril de Sóller (Soller railway), which is one of the most instantly recognisable attractions on the island of Mallorca.
Top Tip: If you are short on time and want to visit two of the iconic towns from Palma, Valldemossa and Sóller, then book onto a day trip which covers both: the Valldemossa and Soller day Trip.
History of the Tren de Sóller – Day Trip to Soller
The train was inaugurated in 1912, and almost instantly changed the life of the Sóller valley. Previosuly this town was largely isolated due to its location across the Tramuntana Mountains, with goods being transported by mule. The train then connected Sóller with Palma, allowing easier transport of oranges, lemons and other produce to the rest of the island.
More than a century later, the train still runs the 27 KM on its original tracks, with stunning preserved carriages and fittings. It is now an iconic experience that showcases an important part of Mallorca’s history.
Sóller vs Port De Sóller – Day trip to Soller
If you are planning a day trip to Sóller, it is important to know that Sóller and Port de Sóller are two separate places. Both offer a different experience, and ideally, you would visit both, which is perfectly possible on a day trip.
Sóller town sits inland, and is where the train arrives. It is full of traditional stone buildings, lively cafes, lots of boutique shops, as well as the historic main square, Plaça de la Constitució, where you can catch the tram to Port De Sóller running through.
Port De Sóller is located around 15 minutes away, situated on the coast. It has a large crescent-shaped beach, loads of waterfront restaurants, and much more of a relaxed seaside holiday feel.

How to get to Port de Sóller on the train
It could not be easier to catch the train to Sóller from Palma. The train departs from the Ferrocarril de Sóller railway station at Plaça d’Espanya in Palma, which is very centrally located and easy to reach either on foot, by metro or by taxi.

The journey to Sóller takes around one hour and is incredibly beautiful, travelling through the Tramuntana mountains, olive groves, and tunnels before arriving in Sóller town. Once in Sóller, you then catch the historic Sóller tram (Tranvía de Sóller). This charming tram ride takes approximately 15 minutes and travels through orange groves and along the coastline, finishing right at the promenade in Port de Sóller.
If you choose to immediately catch the tram to Port De Sóller, make sure to allow some time for Sóller town on your return trip!
How much is the Tren de Sóller
There are a few options when booking your tickets for the train.
Typical Prices (as of late 2025/early 2026):
- Palma to Sóller (Train Only):
- One-Way: Around €23.
- Return: Around €30.
- Sóller to Port de Sóller (Tram Only):
- Single: Around €9 – €10.
- Combined Tickets (Train & Tram Return):
- Around €35 – €40 for the full journey (Palma to Sóller return, plus tram to the port).
You can also take the train to Sóller and then head back to Palma by bus from Port de Sóller. The number 204 bus is quicker than the train, with a journey time of around 35 minutes and fares ranging from €2 to €4.
How to book tickets for the Tren de Sóller
You can either book your tickets online or at the Ferrocarril de Sóller. Booking online guarentees you departure time, as the train can get busy in peak season. If you want more flexibility and choose to purchase at the station, make sure to have cash with you as they don’t accept cards.
Timetable for the Train to and from Palma
The timetable for the train to Sóller varies throughout the seasons in the year, and in the low season, there is only one train. The train doesn’t run at all from mid-December through to the end of January, as it is closed for maintenance.
Below is the current timetable (correct at the time of writing), but do check as it does change seasonally – particularly between summer and winter. The timetable can be found here.

Timetable for the Tram to and from Port De Sóller
Trams depart from Sóller every hour from 8 am until 7 pm. The same tram then returns the other way, from Sóller to Palma, so these times are on the half hour, from 8.30 am to 7.30 pm. But again, there is a reduced service in the winter, so make sure to check the timings before you depart. There are timetables at the stops. And the journey takes around 15 minutes.

The experience aboard the train on your Day Trip to Soller
What to expect on board
As you can imagine from a train service that is over 100 years old, the train is very traditional. There are no reserved seats, and no class, but there are two different types of seats. Wooden ones and leather ones. If you want to choose, make sure to get there early. The carriages comprise wooden seats – note that these can be moved to face either direction, you can be facing forwards, no matter which journey you are taking.
There are no toilets on board, nor anywhere to purchase food or drink, so make sure to use the station facilities before setting off.
You can walk between the carriages and step outside on the platforms at the edge of each carriage to get unparalleled views of the countryside passing you by. The train travels through 22 tunnels, so make sure to keep an eye out of you are outside taking in the view!
The trams to Port De Sóller are from the same time period, so expect similar. Although these are smaller and more ‘shuttle’ style.

What you see aboard the train on a Day Trip to Soller
As the train pulls out from Palma, the scenery on your day trip to Soller starts with urban scenes, but it isn’t long before it gives way to countryside with views of olive groves, almond trees and traditional stone fincas. After this, the train starts to gently climb through the Tramuntana Mountains, which is when the train starts to travel through the tunnels along the journey.
On some departures, particularly the morning train, the Tren de Sóller makes a 5–10 minute stop at Bunyola station, which gives you a moment to stretch your legs and take in views over the valley and surrounding mountains before continuing to Sóller.
The highlight is when the train emerges into the Sóller Valley, and you get treated to stunning views of mountains, citrus groves, and terraced hillsides.

Suggested itinerary for a Day Trip to Soller and Port de Sóller
You’ve made it aboard the train, but the journey itself is only part of the experience! Here is how to make the most of your day out.
To maximise your time in both the town and the coast, I recommend taking the first train from Palma in the morning and the last train back in the evening. This gives you a relaxed, unhurried day without feeling rushed, as well as having enough time in both spots.
Morning: Explore Sóller Town
Arrive in Sóller mid-morning, and begin your day in the heart of town at Plaça de la Constitució. This lively square is the perfect place to grab a coffee, fresh orange juice, or a light breakfast before exploring. Make sure to be there at some point on an hour, to see one of the trams heading to Port De Sóller go through. Stand in front of the church to get the perfect picture.

Spend the rest of the morning wandering around the charming streets of the old town. Admire the Church of Sant Bartomeu and the nearby Modernist buildings. Browse the small boutiques and local shops, and enjoy a coffee, simply soaking up the slower, authentic pace of Sóller.
Midday: Tram Ride to Port de Sóller
Catch the midday tram to Port de Sóller, from the main tram stop right outside the railway station in Plaça d’Espanya. The journey takes around 15 minutes and is another great experience. Enjoy the pretty villages and then the coastal views as you travel towards Port de Sóller.

Afternoon: Port de Sóller
Arrive in Port De Sóller in time to grab some lunch from one of the stunning restaurants along the seafront. Following this stroll along the promenade, grab an ice cream and then head to the beach for a relaxing afternoon.
Evening: Return to Palma
As the day winds down, make your way back to Sóller town by tram or return directly to Palma from Port de Sóller by bus if you prefer a quicker journey. Otherwise, hopping back on the last train of the day is a lovely way to end your trip, especially as the light softens over the mountains.

If you have some time in Sóller, then make sure to check out these places:
- Wander Plaça de la Constitució: This is the heart of Sóller and is packed with cafés and in the shadow of the Church of Sant Bartomeu. It is the perfect place to sit with a coffee or fresh orange juice.
- Explore the old streets: Step away from the main square and explore the quieter streets that branch off in every direction. You’ll find traditional stone houses, shuttered windows, and small local shops selling ceramics, linen, and souvenirs made in Mallorca.
- Visit the Sóller Railway Station: Even if you’ve just arrived by train, it’s worth taking a moment to look around the station. Inside, you’ll find a small exhibition of works by Picasso and Miró, making it a surprisingly cultural stop on your day trip.

Port de Sóller offers a completely different atmosphere, with a relaxed coastal feel that’s ideal for the afternoon portion of your day.
- Relax on the beach: It is small but scenic, set within a natural bay and protected from strong waves. It’s a great spot for a swim or simply relaxing with views of the surrounding mountains.

- Lunch by the water: Port de Sóller is one of the best places in the area for a long, relaxed lunch. Choose a restaurant overlooking the water and enjoy fresh seafood, paella, or simple Mediterranean dishes.
- Stay for golden hour: If timing allows, stay until late afternoon or early evening. The light over the bay is particularly beautiful, and the slower pace makes it a lovely place to unwind before heading back to Sóller town and returning to Palma.

Is a day trip to Soller worth it?
Undoubtedly. I really enjoyed my day trip to Soller, and it was the perfect place to explore as a day out from the hustle and bustle of the city. While the train is expensive, it is so lovely to see such an important part of Mallorca’s history.
Both Sóller and Port De Sóller are lovely spots in Mallorca, and I would love to have been able to spend more time in both, with an overnight stay in Port de Sóller.
