Chiang Mai, in the north of Thailand, is the slightly more laid back alternative to the chaos of Bangkok. How to get to Chiang Mai?
Chiang Mai is very well connected, and is the hub for exploring Northern Thailand. As such, there are plenty of options for how to get there.
The airport is well connected with international flights to countries in South East Asia. There are also daily domestic flights to Bangkok, and you can even fly directly to some of the islands. I flew direct from Chiang Mai down to Koh Samui.
Additionally, if you have more time and an want more of an adventure, there is a 12 hour overnight train you can take from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. If you want to maximise comfort, go for the first class sleeper train.
Best things to do in Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai Old Town
The city of Chiang Mai was founded around 1296, and at this time city walls and moats were constructed to protect the city. Parts of these 700 year old walls are still visible today, and they mark out Chiang Mai Old Town. A lot of the best things to do in Chiang Mai can be found within this area. The historic walls give this city a feel unlike other cities in the country. Keep an eye out for the original gates – there are 5 in total. The most famous and well resorted is Tha Phae Gate, which is in the east of the city.

Within the Old Town you will find a lot of temples, monuments, street markets, as well as cafes, restaurants and hotels. Take the time to wander the streets, and spot some of the traditional Lanna-style wooden houses. Many of which have been converted into amenities.
Temples – best things to do in Chiang Mai
A large focus of your time in Chiang Mai is to visit the beautiful temples this city has to offer. Most of these are located within the Old Town. When visiting, remember to be respectful of the religious sanctity of these temples and dress appropriately with shoulders and knees covered.
Make sure not to miss the following:
Wat Chedi Luang
Wat Chedi Luang is one of the best things to do in Chiang Mai because of its deep historical significance and stunning architecture. Built in the 14th century, this ancient temple once housed the revered Emerald Buddha and features a towering, partially ruined chedi (stupa) that was once the tallest structure in the city. Its massive scale, combined with intricate carvings and serene surroundings, makes it a lovely place to wander around. The temple also offers a glimpse into Chiang Maiโs spiritual traditions, with daily monk ceremonies and a chance to participate in a unique โmonk chatโ to learn about Buddhism.

Wat Chiang Man
Wat Chiang Man was built in 1297, and as such is Chiang Mai’s oldest temple. It is home to the Elephant Chedi, which is the oldest structure in the complex. The front half has 15 life sized elephants built into it, and they seem to carry the upper levels on their back.

Wat Phra Singh
Wat Phra Singh is a must-do on the list of best things to do in Chiang Mai! Known for its beautiful Lanna-style architecture and deep cultural significance, itโs one of the cityโs most important temples. Built in the 14th century, itโs home to the famous Phra Singh Buddha statue. The templeโs golden details, intricate wood carvings, and peaceful gardens make it a lovely spot to explore.

Others to temples to check out:
- Si Suphan
- Suan Dok
- Jed Yot/Phra Aram Luang
Drive up to Doi Suthep
Doi Suthep is probably the best known temple in Chiang Mai, and for good reason. However, it is not as accessible as the other temples. Look up from anywhere in Old Town, and you might see the temple peering down on you, from the top of one of Thailand’s highest mountain. There are a couple of ways to get there. If you are feeling energetic, you can walk taking the Monk’s Walk. From the trailhead to Doi Suthep, this takes just over an hour. Alternatively get a Songthaew or a Grab from the Old Town.
On arriving at the temple, you can either chose to walk up the Naga staircase which is just over 300 steps. Or, you can get the cable car. The first place to check out is the magnificent views over Chiang Mai. Then take time to wander the temple, seeing the golden Chedi, dominating the temple, the statue of the white elephant, and you might even see a ceremony.

Shop at the Night Markets
Not to be missed, and absolutely one of the best thing to do in Chiang Mai. The city is synomonous with night markets, and for good reaosn. There are so many that happen around the city, you will be hard pushed to miss one. However, some of the best take place at the weekend,
The most popular of these is the Friday night walking street market, which is located just outside the walls of the city. Also the Sunday night market which runs through the centre of Chiang Mai. But if you aren’t in the city on either of those nights, then don’t miss Chiang Mai Night Bazaar which is in the east of the city, and open everyday.
Eat street food – best things to do in Chiang Mai
If you are visiting one of the night markets then this will provide the perfect opportunity to sample some of the amazing street food Chiang Mai has to offer. Another great place to check out is the Kalare night bazaar. It is essentially a large food court, with loads of stalls offering different foods.

Eat Khao Soi
One of the best known foods in Chiang Mai is Khao Soi. This egg noodle dish consists of a rich curry soup base, topped with crispy noodles and your choice of beef or chicken. It’s served with a side of onions, pickled cabbage, a squeeze of lime, and a variety of spicy sauces to enhance the flavour. It is a dish that can only be found in the North of Thailand, so make sure to try when you are in Chiang Mai
Get a massage
You would be hard pressed to not find somewhere to get a massage in this city, There are literally places on every corner. It is undoubtedly one of the best things to do Chiang Mai. But for something a little different check out the Woman’s Massage Center, which supports the rehabilitation of female prisoners, preparing them for a better life upon their release. Itโs a highly regarded, women-run establishment that offers traditional Thai massages at affordable prices. The women are given 300 hours of training, meaning it offers a good massage at a good price. So, not only do you get a great massage, but you also support a worthy cause while experiencing a true Thai tradition.
Take a ride in a tuk tuk – best things to do in Chiang Mai
Has to be done. No trip to Thailand would be complete without zooming around in a tuk tuk. They are all over Chiang Mai, so it provides the perfect opportunity to flag one down and use it to get between temples. These little three wheeled, open air vehicles are classic Thailand, and such a fun way to travel.

Trips from Chiang Mai – best things to do in Chiang Mai
If you have some more time in this part of the country, some of the best things to do in Chiang Mai actually involve taking a half day, a day, or a three day, trip out of the city. Offering a chance to see some of the beautiful countryside, and temples, that are located outside of the city.
Take a trip to Wat Rong Khun
Wat Rong Khun is better known as the white temple, and is quite unlike anything else you might see. Built in 1997, and still not completed. Part temple, and a lot a piece of art – it really is a sight to be seen. The brilliant white colour dazzles, and then the never ended details means you won’t want to stop looking at it.
Enter the temple over a bridge depicting hell, and inside marvel at the murals which represent hell behind you (including paintings of some well know characters) and heaven in front.

Mok Fa Waterfall
Located in the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, Mok Fa Waterfall is surrounded by lush forest. It is about a 50 minute scooter ride from the city, so a great half day trip to get into the countryside.
The waterfall is tall and the water plunges 60 metres down in to the pool at it’s base. The water is known for being crystal clear, and you can swim.
Hilltribe Trek
A Hilltribe trek is one of the most rewarding experiences you can do in Northern Thailand. Setting off from Chiang Mai, most treks are 3 days / 2 nights long. You trek through the most stunning scenery, from lush junlge to rice paddy fields and will stop and have lunches in some of the most remarkable settings. Overnight will be spent in a Karen village, where you can meet and learn about the wonderful culture and traditions of these people. It is physically demanding, so the reward will be worth it. This is one of the best things to do in Chiang Mai (or Chiang Mai adjacent!).
You will need a guide when going on a Hilltribe trek or join a tour, such as this one by G Adventures.
