Post holiday blues and trying to beat them

Coming back from my recent, amazing, break to Menorca I suffered the worst post holiday blues I have had for a while. So I thought I would put a post together on my favourite things about being back home and beating those dreaded blues.

1. That first cup of tea

I am aware how awfully, terribly British this first point sounds. But really, jet lagged, tired or just emotionally exhausted. A good cup of tea really does help. I mean, sure you can have tea when you’re travelling but it doesn’t really taste the same. Especially when you’re in Asia and all you can get is Lipton. And they don’t even understand the concept of milk.

I also have a massive thing for Emma Bridgewater mugs. My collection now stands at over 30, including my seasonal ones. And a cup of tea never tastes as good as when it is one of those. Get my your own, and one of my favourite ones, here.

Tip: buy milk at the airport or a service station on the drive home. Then you can have that wonderful cup tea as soon as you walk in the door.

2. Clean clothes

Whether you have been living out of a backpack, or just have a suitcase full of clothes from that beach holiday. There is something quite lovely about coming home and being able to wash all your clothes.

Having options again and being able to wear something that isn’t creased; it’s a good feeling. Plus, the smell of freshly laundered clothes is one of the best. Picture this. You’re tired, a bit emotional and maybe just a little wistful. Now you’re curled up on your sofa in your favourite comfy, clean clothes (probably with a cup of tea, in my case). That feeling is worth celebrating.

3. Sleeping in your own bed

I am one of those lucky people that can sleep anywhere. It’s one of the reasons I believe I am such a good traveller. However, even for me, the best nights sleep is in my own bed. Sure it might mean the daily grind is about to begin again. But is there anything better than curling up in your own bed, ready for your best nights sleep?

It’s hard to have any blues, post holiday blues or otherwise, when you are that comfy.

Tip – change your bed sheets just before you go away. Clean sheets will only intensify how good this will feel.

4. Catching up with friends

I guess this is more for if you have been away for a long trip. I am sure there will be someone you have really missed.

But even if you have only been away for a short break, book in lunch with a friend. Or a walk. Or a concert. Anything really, just something else you really want to do. Having something to look forward to when you get back makes it so much easier. Even just a little something.

A friendly face and someone to chat about your holiday will go a long way when you have the blues.

5. Planning the next trip

This is the best bit. Let’s face it. There is a little part of me that almost enjoys the planning more. Almost is the key word in that sentence.

It is so exciting to sit down and work out what you want to see on your next trip. Buy a guide book, check your favourite blogger’s posts and start putting that itinerary together. Trust me, nothing will help you stop feeling sad about the last trip being over than getting excited about the next one.

I always have the next flight booked before arriving back home. Otherwise I get really panicky. In fact, I booked my trip to Mongolia in September 2016 (and went in August 2017). Since then I haven’t had a time without having something booked. Right now I have a trip booked for April 2019 – something to keep looking forward to!

But even if it is a just a weekend mini break, or a staycation, it is definitely worth having the next trip to get excited about.

6. Embrace the post holiday blues

This one is the most important.

Having the post holiday blues can only mean you had the most amazing time. So cherish the memory. Blog about it, print photos to frame, tell your friends why they absolutely should go there, reminisce with the people you were with. Remember how lucky you are to have experienced that moment.

If you didn’t have the blues, it means the trip wasn’t worth having.

    Booking the next trip is definitely the best cure! Hopefully you’ll squeeze some more travel in before April though 🙂

      I am sure I will! April is the next ‘big’ trip, but do have other shorter ones planned in the meantime.

    Yessss #3…. nothing beats sleeping in my own bed!
    Beating the post holiday blues also helps a lot when you have a cute cat waiting for you at home. 😀
